Panel at the CSW Consultation Day, on UN Women

Charolotte Bunch, Center for Women's Global Leadership, Bani Dugal, Baha'i International Community to the UN, and Rachel Harris, WEDO gave an excellent overview of UN Women and the work ahead.

Also, what is our (NGO) task - it is to think strategically - UN Women can not do everything – UN can do certain things.
UN Women want to hear from us – not just a laundry list. Where can UN Women make a difference? What kind of redress. Where do we want to see those strategies, Incredible moment- Collaboration of NGOs can ensure women’s voices in democracy.
Both an opportunity and a crises (like in Afghanistan and the funding of shelters for women, now the Afghan government wanting to take them over).

This panel spoke about the GEAR campaign – joint strategic entity. Creation is a an acknowledgment of the work of NGOs. Michelle Bachelet is wanting consultation. From the very onset. GEAR has a 6 point proposal and Michelle Bachellet has adopted 2 of them.

The 6 point proposal includes:
  • Establishment of liaison units that will work with civil society. There were some – but uniform commitment, at country and regional level. An office, and focal point.
  • Advisory councils. At local and regional levels – diverse representation – other stake holders.
  • Establish thematic working groups – accountability mechanisms.
  • Appointment of independent thematic experts – advisors, on the ground. Experts supported by the UN. Link between civil society and UN.
  • Dynamic forums – at CSW and key UN events. Regular meetings.
  • Full participation at Executive meetings. More meaningful than just making statements. 6 points previous.
UN Women and GEAR want to hear from YOU – what is needed?
Strategic planning process now underway they are doing one for the next UN Women meeting in June. Try to give some solid input for the Strategic Plan.
Several opportunities to provide input to GEAR during the CSW.
